Inspect a Forklift
HRSDC and OSHA report that more than 10,000 workplace injuries related to fork lifts happen every year. Operator error is the reason for many of these accidents. Lack of appropriate equipment maintenance and check causes numerous others. Operation and maintenance of a forklift is not only the reason for personal injuries, but also of property damage. Forklifts can damage sprinklers, building structures and overhead pipes, and other machinery when wrongly operated. The following daily check ups must be done so as to lessen the chance of forklift mishaps.

Before inspecting various fluid levels turn off the engine. Check these fluids: hydraulic oil, fuel, engine oil, coolant and brake fluid. The tires also need to be checked for indications of wear and tear. Check the tire air pressure. Check the condition of the forks. The load backrest need to be firmly attached. Do a visual inspection of the top-clip retaining heel and pin. Next carry out an inspection of the mast chains, hydraulic hoses, stops and cables. Make sure that the overhead and finger guards are securely attached.

The LP fueled forklift has propane tanks which need to be inspected for corrosion, damage or rust. The battery's electrolyte levels and charge have to be tested every so often. Seat belts have to be checked for wear and tear. Check to make sure the owner's instruction manual is stored on-board the forklift in a storage compartment. Check the seat belt to make sure the latches are secure. Check the hood latch to make sure that it is functioning as it should.

To make certain there are no unusual engine sounds, start the engine up and listen for any irregularities. If there are, investigate promptly. Test the accelerator and the steering controls. The service brake and the parking break should be properly working.

To ensure proper functioning in both forward and reverse, the drive control and tilt control must be checked. The functioning of the lowering control, the hoist and attachment control requires periodic checking. Test the horn and lights. After that check the wipers, heater and defroster to make sure they are functioning smoothly. Inspect every gauge to find out that it is reading within functional limits.
