Propane cylinders are designed to take up very little space and could be kept inside the storage area or in an outdoor facility. It does take some time to switch out a propane cylinder, though, it still does needs operator training in order to be conducted safely and also require knowledge of safety standards like the Occupational Health and Safety Administration or OSHA.
Compared to the electric forklift, IC forklifts are easier and faster to refuel. Then again, the internal combustion engine does produce polluting emissions and are extremely noisy.
NARROW-AISLE LIFT TRUCKS
The ITA's Class 2 trucks comprise a large range of electric lift trucks and these are specifically made to be utilized in narrow aisles. The standard storage aisles are 12 feet wide, and this easily allows a counterbalanced forklift to turn in the aisle and put a load away. Typically, the very narrow aisles are around 5.5 to 6 feet wide, while narrow aisles are 8 feet wide. These narrow aisles require specialized lift trucks which are capable of putting away cargo which are small enough to turn on a tight radius or without any turning at all.
The three most common narrow aisle lift trucks are the turret trucks, order pickers and reach trucks. The differences amongst these lift trucks are discussed below.
Narrow-Aisle Reach Trucks
The original narrow-aisle lift truck is considered to be the traditional reach truck. These machines do not need a huge counterweight and are thus, small enough to turn in narrow aisles. Instead, stability is provided by the outrigger arms that extend in front of the forklifts. Then again, these outrigger arms could prevent the lift trucks from getting close enough to the storage rack to retrieve and deposit cargo, depending on the storage configuration. To be able to overcome this specific situation, a pantograph was designed. The pantograph is a reach truck that is made with a telescoping mechanism. This enables forks to reach into storage areas concisely and easily.
The best environment for narrow aisle forklifts is a place that has clean floors, good lighting and good traffic flow, well-maintained floor, as well as ample turning space.
