Inspect a Forklift
Workplace injuries related to forklift usage in North America average about over 10,000 every year, according to the statistics from OSHA and the HRSDC. Some injuries result from the lack of correct equipment inspection and maintenance of the machinery. Other injuries are due to operator error.

Injuries are not the only issues which are related to the maintenance and operation of forklifts. One more serious concern is damage to property. Lift truck accidents can lead to damage to overhead pipes, sprinklers, and other equipment as well as building walls. By completing thorough inspections on a daily basis, you could help reduce forklift injuries.

When beginning an inspection, turn off the engine. Check the levels of the fuel, engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant and brake fluid. Visually check the tires of the machine looking for indications of wear, general condition and appropriate air pressure. Visually inspect the forks on the front of the machinery as well. Verify the condition of the top-clip retaining pin and heel. Check that the backrest is securely attached. Confirm that the overhead and finger guards are attached. Visually inspect the stops and cables, the hydraulic hoses and the mast chains as well.

You must inspect the propane tank if you are using LP or liquid propane forklifts. Look for any signs of damage, rust or corrosion. Be certain that the battery has adequate levels of electrolyte and that is charged adequately. Visually inspect all belts. Check to verify the location of the owner's handbook and make sure it is situated in the designated on-board storage compartment. Confirm the hood latch and confirm that it is functioning as it is supposed to. Inspect the seatbelt and make certain it latches securely and is working correctly.

After completing the steps above, turn on the engine. Listen carefully to the engine. Investigate any strange sounds immediately. Check that both the parking brake and the service brake are functioning properly. Make sure that the steering controls and the accelerator are working at optimum performance levels.
